History left a great cultural heritage in Slovakia. Out of 138 Slovak cities 18 are urban monument reservations. Each of them is unique in some respects. Overall, in these cities there are over 12 thousand cultural monuments. In Slovakia, there are also 88 monument zones.

Nature and hiking

Slovakia lies in central Europe and despite its quite small size, there is a concentration a huge number of natural sites. In a relatively small country of Slovakia, there are over 1000 reservation areas. You will find there 9 national parks and 16 protected landscape areas with a plethora of rare plants and animals. It is actually a great advantage that in Slovakia virtually everything is close enough.

Slovakia is not just about nature. In Slovakia you will find well-preserved and renovated castles, fortresses, and mansions, wherein you will feel as though you were far back in history. Slovakia is well-known for its spa tradition, not only in the surrounding countries, but also in the whole world. The smallest high mountain range in the world, High Tatras (Vysoké Tatry) can be enjoyed in any season of the year. If you're one of the fans of winter, Slovakia is ideal for your ski vacation. Wonderful outlooks from high peaks of Tatras such as Lomnický peak (Lomnický štít), Rysy, or Chopok, unveil crystal-clear mountain tarns and torrents. What is “best” and “only” in Slovakia?

In Slovakia, you will be able to find things that are nowhere elese in the world. Slovak Karst, the largest karst area in central Europe, wherein there are 1100 caves. Spišský castle, a largest medieval castle complex in central Europe, Červený kameň castle with the largest underground complex, the tallest gothic altar in the world found in Levoča, or Janko Kráľ Orchard in Bratislava, the oldest public park in Europe.
A many other fascinating “best” or “only” places in the world, which are worthy to be seen with your own eyes and experienced personally. Slovakia is a part of Europe that is saturated with diversity on every step of the way through it – simply “a little big country”.


KOŠICE is the metropolis of Eastern Slovakia and the second largest town of the Slovak Republic.

The town has a rich and famous past, which left jewels of architecture. After extensive reconstruction work the historic downtown, which is the largest urban monument reserve on Slovakia, has become the object of pride not only for Košičans but for all of Slovakia.

To the recreational area belong the park at the Immaculata and the park of the Singing fountain - both popular places for inhabitants and visitors alike. Especially the later takes pride in its uniqueness. Places of Interest The Singing fountain and the chimes are a real attraction: The fountain as able simultaneously to react to its own music, to the sound of the chimes and to the music transmitted from the nearby theatre. This musical play makes a stay in the park truly rewarding and also accompanies a walk around the Urban tower, the cathedral St. Elisabeth - with the chapel St. Michael - and the streets around the Golden Cross in downtown.

Košice is distinguished by exciting cultural, social and sports events. Among the most important events are the Košice Spring of Music, the promenade concerts during the Košice Summer of Culture, the Festival of Sacred Music, the international contest of water-ski, the International Peace Marathon, wine festivals and others.

Besides these events there are cultural experiences offered by four theatres, museums, art galleries, cinemas and cultural-social centers during all year round. Among the most important social events belongs without doubt the celebration Day of Košice, which has become a tradition and receives also attention from abroad: On the 7th May 1369 Košice received as the first town in Europe the deed with the coat-of-arms.The Košičans consider it an honour to contribute to the celebrations during the anual commemoration. May has become the month to present the most interesting events in the life of enterprises, institutionsand associations.

At the end of the year, the wonderful decoration of the town during the Košice Christmas has become already a legend: there is a Christmas market at the main road with an almost three weeks lasting cultural program, creating a fantastic Christmas atmosphere! The rich cultural, social and sports life and the famous hospitality, the religious and ethnic tolerance of the Košičans receive from visitors positive response. The city has become a favourite destination for statesmen, diplomates and other important persons, their names are immortalized on the pavement of the historic downtown.

Historical Monuments in Kosice

Historical core of Košice represents the biggest reservoir of historical monuments in Slovakia. In terms of art & history, the most valuable buildings are situated around the original Middle Age square - present Main Street.
